Identify the 'or' Sound in Words
Find the 'or' sound in words like fork, corn, and horn.
1st Grade - English Language Arts - R-Controlled Vowels
About This Skill
In words like fork, corn, and horn, the letters O and R team up to make one new sound - the 'or' sound. We call it the bossy R, because the R changes the vowel. In this Grade 1 skill, children look, listen, read, and choose - bonding the letters 'or' to their sound in single-syllable words, while later patterns like work and word stay for Grade 2. Support fades across three levels (picture + audio with word choices -> written word + audio with picture choices -> audio with written choices), so children move from hearing the sound to reading and listening for it.
