Identify Words with Prefixes (un-, re-, pre-, dis-)
Understand prefix meanings: unlock new words!
3rd Grade - English Language Arts - Prefixes and Suffixes
About This Skill
On Iqleel, third-grade students will investigate how the prefixes un-, re-, pre-, and dis- change the meaning of a root word. They will learn that 'un-' means 'not' (as in 'unhappy'), 're-' means 'again' (as in 'reread'), 'pre-' means 'before' (as in 'preview'), and 'dis-' means 'not' or 'opposite of' (as in 'disagree'). This skill helps them use these prefixes as clues to unlock the meaning of unfamiliar words. This is a very powerful vocabulary-building skill that improves reading comprehension by allowing students to perform word analysis on new words they encounter.
