Identify Circles, Triangles, Squares, and Rectangles

Spot and name circles, triangles, squares, and other rectangles!

Kindergarten - Math - 2D shapes

About This Skill

Discover circles, triangles, squares, and other rectangles in Kindergarten! This skill introduces young learners to these common 2D shapes. Children will learn to identify a circle by its roundness (no straight sides, no corners), a triangle by its three straight sides and three corners, and both squares (with four equal straight sides and four corners) and other rectangles (also with four straight sides and four corners, where sides can be different lengths). They'll practice naming these flat shapes and finding examples of them in everyday objects, building a great start in early geometry.

Curriculum Alignment

  • K.G.A.2: Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
  • AC9MFSP01: sort, name and create familiar shapes; recognise and describe familiar shapes within objects in the environment, giving reasons
  • NY-K.G.2
  • K.G.B.4: Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/"corners") and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).
