Use Attributes to Define 2D Figures
Define 2D shapes by counting their sides and corners!
1st Grade - Math - 2D shapes
About This Skill
Go beyond simply naming shapes and learn what truly makes them unique in this Grade 1 skill, 'Use Attributes to Define Two-Dimensional Figures.' Students will become shape analysts, focusing on key attributes like the number of straight sides and vertices (corners). They'll learn to confidently state that a triangle is defined by its 3 sides and 3 vertices, and a square by its 4 equal sides and 4 vertices. This builds a deeper, rule-based understanding of geometry and helps distinguish one 2D shape from another.

Curriculum Alignment
- 1.G.A.1: Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
- AC9M1SP01: make, compare and classify familiar shapes; recognise familiar shapes and objects in the environment, identifying the similarities and differences between them
